Life at a Folkehøyskole!

As you can see, its been a while since my last post. The reason for this is that i started something called "Folkehøyskole"! This is a norwegian kind of school that was established in the early 1900´s, with no kinds of exams or tests. I go to a school called Grenland Folkehøyskole, that is in Porsgrunn. This kind of school is commonly viewed as som kind of rest year for young adults. They get to have a year of experiences and fun without the pressure of exams, or even jobs.

We had our first day of school on August 18th, where we were met by the seckond year students who had arrived a week before the rest of us. They are called "stipendiater" or "stipps" which means scholars. That is because these students have some extra responsibility, and are more social workers than students. In return for this they get to go to school a lot cheaper. BUT ANYWAYS- enough facts and boring talk!

The first week was mostly all 100 students and teachers trying to get to know one another, as well as settling in to our dorms, as this is a boarding school. We had A LOT of games this week, and also got to know some of the places around town. It was pretty cool to see how fast you get to know each other when living so close! I live in K7, together with 9 other people, and i share a room with one of them, Sara. The next weeks we kind of eased intu the everyday life here at Grenland. We startet having classes (which are not the kind of classes you think), and also got to choose our elected classes. When we applied to the school we had to choose our main subject, where i chose backpacking, and now we also have some other classes as well. For my elective classes i currently have sandvolleyball, handball, "leseglede" (we sit for two hours and read a book of our choice once a week) as well as arts. I am so happy with this ccombination as it allows me to both be active and also to calm down and just be! Very mindful, very demure;)

In our backpacker classes we normally go for some kind of hike, kayaking or sleeping outdoors! In a couple of weeks we are going on a roadtrip in the south of norway where we get to learn how to surf, and are going to put our hammocs into an old tunnel to sleep in! I cannot wait to see all the exciting things i will experience this year!

As you also can see on these pictures, we had a trip to somewhere called Rjukan last week. The first day i got to try bungee jumping with a bunch of the other students! It was not at all what i had imagined, but its a really cool thing to have done:) On day two we went to a famous mountain in norway called Gaustadtoppen. It is said that you are able to see 1/6 of the entire country from the top, and they are right! With such amazing weather, the view was immaculate, and so was the company! I cannot wait to tell you all of the things we are going to experience here, but for now i am just going to enjoy the time here with the people who already feel like a second family to me!

With great kindness and joy
